What is
Sacredibility? use of secular music forms and popular songs for Christian worship. The Rock Prophets music ministry is based on the hope of reaching people for Jesus Christ and we use popular and secular music along side alternative Christian rock and praise and worship music. Every song we choose must pass the test of . . ."Sacredibility"
We ask
ourselves, "How can this song be used to glorify God?"
Sacredibility is more than worship anthems specifically written to praise God. What good is sacred music if it doesn't bridge the gap to the emerging culture... one that is not easily inspired by organ music? Music has power both to speak to and speak for a person's experience. As such, we believe popular music is popular because it speaks to the heart or gives voice to the heart. Even the most wretched forms of hate-filled, death music, like that in some metal rock and gangster rap, speaks to and for the souls of some. That's why it's popular and powerful in the life of listeners. |

Certain forms of music are powerful for select segments of society. The church can and should use popular music to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the context of Christian worship, secular forms of music and popular songs can be utilized to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. Since popular music has power to open hearts and minds, what better message to plant in those open hearts and minds than what God has done, is doing and shall do in Jesus Christ for the world? Secular songs usually serve to set up a dialogue. In some cases they are songs with lyrical content that is easily paralleled to the Christian worldview. For instance, just about any love song can be directed at God as the One to whom we give our ultimate love. In other cases secular songs represent the human condition quite well. We use such songs to begin a sermon of sorts. We help our audience to see the human need for God through the issue lifted in a particular song and then give them God's solution in Jesus Christ. Our approach in the use of secular music starts a conversation with people, where people are, with the music they like. Then we direct their eyes from our common human problem to God's salvation in Jesus. Sacredibility is about the use of music for ONE purpose, the mediation of the Word of God, eternal and made flesh in Jesus. Something is sacred if it is holy, utterly set apart for God's purposes. Something is credible if it communicates and speaks to or for someone's experience. It's credible if it's real and applicable to the living of one's life. When the church uses unashamedly forms of popular music in worship, we are inviting people to worship Christ in ways with which they are already comfortable. Yet the church is not selling out, nor shortchanging God's call to make disciples. On the contrary, this is a tried and true method of evangelism used by foreign missionaries. "Speak their language and they will hear you." We are merely trying to speak the popular music language of the people who are foreign to the church and church customs. Music is sacredible when it is used for the sole purpose of reaching people for Jesus Christ, in a way credible to the target populace's experience, to the glory of God. Is this credible to God and the gospel? As long as Jesus and the good news of vanquished sin and death through the power of God is given, and if the music is unashamedly shared with as much or more enthusiasm as the message… We believe it is credible to God and the gospel. We seek to plant the seed of the word about the kingdom of Heaven in the open hearts of hearers through secular and Christian music. That is our sacredible task. |
